The Compassion Project

The Heart of Rescue…

What makes us different from other rescues are the animals we take in are not only shelter animals or strays - they are animals that have been abused, neglected, left behind and forgotten about. These animals have been waiting for the day that someone would come to save them. We shine a light into the dark corners of the world while enacting change, providing second chances and teaching compassion through animals.

Our Mission

Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on rescuing abused and neglected animals - locally, internationally and throughout the Asian Dog Meat Trade - rehabilitating them and finding them their forever homes. We embrace compassion, education and legislation to guide hearts and minds toward a brighter future for animals.

Our History and Future

Sherman Oaks, California is where the Foundation first embarked upon its journey - we started with rescuing local abuse and neglect cases and quickly escalated into taking our efforts overseas and into law and education where we raise awareness and enact change.

Starting in 2011, our Founder, Marc Ching wanted to create a place for animals that had been mistreated so they could be given a second chance- a place to be loved, shown compassion, and above all else, a place where they belonged and would be free.

In 2015 we extended our reach globally to include rescuing animals from the Asian Dog Meat Trade. These animals are stolen and/or bred into slaughterhouses, meat farms and markets - forced to partake in a trade of torture and exploitation for their meat, bones, fur, etc. We pushed through the trade by going undercover as an international buyer and purchased as many animals as we could - getting them to safety and freedom. Other times we negotiated the closing of a slaughterhouse or a farm and started a cruelty free business there in it’s place. As the rescues continued, we decided to extend our presence and founded Animal Hope and Wellness China. At our China Shelter we have housed thousands of dogs, providing medical attention and a new home. Here they wait until transport to either our Sherman Oaks location or another reputable rescue where they are put up for adoption to find their forever homes. At both of our locations we educate the next generations to know, understand and teach compassion through animals - they are given an opportunity to view animals as friends and family.

After many rescue missions commenced, we decided the only way to prevent these situations was to create and sponsor laws to protect these animals from being exploited, abused and neglected. With that, Animal Hope In Legislation was founded in 2018 centering on legislation at the Local, State and Federal level for all ages, pushing to enact laws to protect animals and teach people about them in the process.

As a Foundation we assist with many levels of rescue, including aiding during natural disasters. We provide search and rescue, as well as emergency response needs. During the Skirball and Thomas Fires, we evacuated animals left behind in danger. Throughout Hurricane Harvey, we flew in with our team and rescued those in need from the flood zone. During the most recent natural disaster, the Woolsey Fire, we evacuated over 300 animals, provided them temporary homes and then reunited them with their families when they were ready. Whether its a slaughterhouse in China, an animal hoarder house in Los Angeles or a natural disaster, rescue is what we do; we are here to help.

Outside of rescue, our Foundation engages in many programs focused on bringing people and animals together. Whether its visiting a senior center and putting a smile on someones face or running around a play yard with a kindergarten class, our dogs are always bringing people together and teaching them compassion.

Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 tax exempt organization based in the State of California.
